¡°Cooperation and Partnership between the Chinese and the Korean Churches¡±

Rev. Kim Myung Hyuk, Ph.D. (Co-chairman of KWMA, Pastor of Kangbyun Church)
E-mail:mhkim7@unitel.co.kr

I would like to express our gratitude for your present hospitalities extended us as well as for your past support for the Korean provisional government stationed here in Shanghai. I would also like to express my respect for your faithfulness to have served the Chinese churches in spite of much difficulty. We are also marveled at the great development and progress of this historic city.
Cooperation and partnership is one of the most important issues in modern world and the church. It is more so because of the fact that the discord, enmity and confrontation caused by the interests of nationalism are increasingly prevalent throughout the modern world. Personally I have keenly felt the need of cooperation and partnership in the church and mission and have participated in various networking conferences and presented a number of papers on the theme of ¡°Cooperation and Partnership in Mission.¡± I presented a plenary paper on the "Cooperation and Partnership in Missions" at the AMC I held in Seoul, Korea (1990.8.27-31), a plenary paper on the "Principles of Two-Third World Mission Partnership" at the Consultation on Partnership for World Mission held in Chicago, USA (1991.5.9-11), and a plenary paper on the ¡°Partnership of Ministry with the Japanese Churches¡± at the Third Congress on Evangelism held in Shiobara, Japan (1991.6.4-6).
Now it is very significant that the leaders from both Chinese and the Korean churches are gathered here together for fellowship and sharing of our mind and thought for the benefit of both churches as well as for both nations. There is much commonness of cultural heritage between us and it would be worthwhile to enlighten and develop the good of it. Here now I present some of my thought and wish for the cooperation and partnership between our two churches.
First, it would be beneficial that both churches learn from each other and strengthen fellowship by holding occasional ¡®round table talk¡¯ between the two church leaders. The Japan Evangelical Association and Korea Evangelical Fellowship continue to have round table talk every year for the past 6 years and it was very fruitful. The theme of the 5th round table talk of 2001 was the ¡®Love and Justice¡± and the theme of the 6th round table talk was the ¡®Nationalism and the Kingdom of God.¡¯
Second, it would be beneficial to establish an official networking between the ¡®Chinese Church Association¡¯ and the ¡®Korean World Mission Association¡¯ for exchanging ministers of evangelism and pastoral ministry and holding a seminar on the theme of Church Renewal and Growth both for the ministers in both nations. We could arrange church leaders to visit Seminary and deliver lectures. We could also hold a seminar on the theme of heretical movement and work together to deal with it.
Third, it would be desirable that we admit and respect the cultural, social, economic and political tradition and reality of both nations and restrain from negatively criticizing different value systems. It is because there are usually both positive and negative elements in any socio-political system such as democracy and socialism.
Fourth, it would be also desirable for us to constructively point out some ethical and religious wrongs, which could arise from political imperialism such as the enforcement of Shinto shrine worship and the trampling upon human rights. The JEA together with the KEF has officially criticized the act of Shinto shrine worship by the Japanese political leaders (also of the President Bush) and admitted with apology the wrongs of trampling human rights committed by the Japanese government in the past.
Fifth, we could also contribute to play an important role to establish peace, unity and welfare in North and South Korea as well as in Asia. We could together speak out against any politico-military aggressive attempt by any nations and appeal for peace, unity and welfare in Asia. The Chinese Church could play a very important role in these areas.
I would like to conclude my proposal by pointing out a few remarks that I made in my recent paper on the theme of ¡®Partnership Mission in the Age of Globalization.¡¯ In my paper I pointed out five remarks. In order to carry out the partnership mission or ministry there should be changes in five areas. 1) There should be changes of eyes and mind towards the world. The world should not be seen as the object of conquer but of service and co-existence. 2) There should be changes of eyes and mind towards the mankind. Mankind should not be seen as evil and contemptible but different and respectable. 3) There should be changes of eyes and mind towards partners. Co-workers should not be neglected but be respected. 4) There should be changes of eyes and mind towards oneself. One should not overestimate nor underestimate self. 5) There should be changes of eyes and mind towards God. When we learn how to look up to God, we could be posed rather balanced and integral. Yuan Shangdi Zhufu Nimen.
